A 35-year veteran of the US Army, Powell rose to the rank of Four Star General, then served as National Security Advisor under President Ronald Reagan, as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton and as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush.
